School bus fire reported on Fresno-area route. Kids rushed off, Cal Fire says

A bus full of Fresno County children was reported to be on fire as it headed to school near Riverdale, Cal Fire said Wednesday.

None of the 20 students on board were injured by the reported fire at about 7 a.m. as the bus was traveling near Mt. Whitney and Fruit avenues east of Riverdale, Battalion Chief Brandon Markle said.

The bus engine apparently blew a seal and caused black smoke to pour out.

All of the students exited the yellow school bus and stood about 100 feet away as fire crews and emergency services arrived, he said. Crews did not end up having to spray any water on the mechanical problem.

A second bus arrived to take the children to school as a district supervisor assessed the scene, Markle said.

About two hours later, the bus could be seen being towed away by a truck.
