School from 'Remember the Titans' has name changed to distance it from segregationist

The school from "Remember the Titans" has a new name. Alexandria City Public Schools announced Friday that T.C. Williams High School will now be known as Alexandria City High School.

The announcement comes months after the school board voted to change the name. Prior to making that decision, the school board sent out a survey asking about the name change and found that 75 percent of respondents supported the idea.

T.C. Williams was named after a superintendent in Alexandria, Virginia, who opposed desegregation. Calls to change the school's name have existed for years, but the issue attracted more attention as Confederate monuments around the United States have been removed.

Alexandria City High School will keep Titans name

The school name will change, but its mascot will remain the same. The Titans will still be remembered at the school.

The story of the Titans was immortalized in the 2000 movie "Remember the Titans," which starred Denzel Washington.

The school is, obviously, referred to by its old name in the movie. The team's name — and the film's message — remains the same.
