School project: Roam the halls of Worcester's under-construction Doherty High (by drone)

WORCESTER - The first day of school at the new Doherty Memorial High School is a year away, with the 422,000-square-foot building slowly taking shape in the shadow of its eventual predecessor, the current high school.

But for those eager to walk the halls of Worcester's $316 million school, a new video offers a soaring look at the under-construction building.

Josh Wingell, an FAA certified drone operator, was recently given access to the bare-boned interior of the school by the general contractor, Fontaine Bros. He used a small drone, known as a first-person view drone (FPV), and special goggles that allow the operator to see what the drone camera sees.

“It was amazing just to get invited to see the inside of the new Doherty building," Wingell said, "but to be able to fly my drone inside and capture it so I could share the footage with rest of the Worcester community was truly an incredible experience.”

Wingell produced a behind-the-scenes peek at the interior construction, a look that will be tough to envision with the eventual arrival of fresh paint, bright lights and hundreds of students. The school is set to open for the 2024-25 school year.
