School of Science and Technology assistant principal named finalist for statewide award
Dominique Janeway, assistant principal at the School of Science and Technology's Bayshore Campus, is a finalist for District or Campus Administrator of the Year from the Texas Computer Education Association.
TCEA is a global, nonprofit, member-based organization with a mission dedicated to advancing teaching and learning through the use of technology since 1980.
The finalists were announced Dec. 14, 2021, and winners will be named March 1.
Also the dean of academics for third- through seventh-grade students, Janeway has spent the last two years as an administrator at Bayshore and previously was a third-grade science teacher at the School of Science and Technology Elementary.
When she found out she was nominated, it took her by surprise.
"I've presented at the conference for TCEA before, so I honestly thought they were calling in regards to me presenting again," Janeway said. "I did not know I was even nominated. It would be pretty exciting to win because it has been a difficult year in education."
Janeway said the nomination came from an anonymous teacher at her campus and she still isn't sure who did it.
Cammie Bonilla, outreach coordinator for the school, described Janeway as driven, dedicated and the true definition of an educator. Bonilla said on many occasions, Janeway brought home-cooked meals to feed her teachers.
"Her intent is to fuel the souls of her teachers for the workday," Bonilla said. "This is when she shines because Assistant Principal Janeway knows the needs of her teachers. She consistently remains in contact with her students and staff to ensure everyone is focused, comfortable and succeeding in and out of the classrooms."
Janeway said having started her education career in San Antonio ISD as a teacher, she understands how difficult being a teacher can be at times and is dedicated to helping out when and where she can.
"I strive to be as empathetic as possible," Janeway said. "I love stepping in for teachers to catch a breather for a few minutes or due to personal reasons. I'm always running around the campus helping out where needed."
Bonilla said she believes Janeway deserves the title because she executes her goals with compassion, precision and cooperation.
"Her dedication regarding her teachers is endless, and the focus she displays each and every day is a beautiful thing to witness," Bonilla said. "Mrs. Janeway unselfishly gives of herself, her time and attention to others."
