School students send Valentine’s cards to Habit for Humanity

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Valentine’s cards were placed around the walls of a Habitat for Humanity home currently being built in Elmira. They were written by students from Parley Coburn Elementary School and were all addressed to the volunteers building the home.

“It was shocking when I came in this morning and saw all the walls in the downstairs just covered with the Valentine’s from the kids,” said volunteer, Al Draht. At first I thought it was the family but I guess the kids at Parley Coburn got busy, and there’s hundreds of them down there it was pretty neat to see that they were so involved and so interested.”

Chemung County law enforcement build Habitat for Humanity home

According to Chemung County Habitat for Humanity, the home has been worked on since October 2023. As of now, drywall and hallways are in progress of being formatted. Plumbing and electrical wiring will be installed next.

Taking credit for the work that has been done on the house is not the most important part, according to the volunteers.

Construction Manager of Chemung County Habitat for Humanity Al Cooke said, “The feeling is to see people happy, so when the people come into their home or take possession of their home, it’s a joy to see what my work as well as the volunteers have put out in order for them to live comfortably with no problems.”

A family of three will soon move into the home. It is scheduled to be finished by late March or early April.
