Your Schools: Bay County schools salutes military, families
George S. Patton Jr once said, “The soldier is the army. No army is better than its soldiers. The soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country."
As we approach our annual Veterans Day recognitions and services, I’d like to take a minute to thank all of those who have served our country.
And my gratitude extends not only to those who actually enlisted and answered the call to serve in the military but to their family members as well. Certainly the family members of our men and women in uniform serve their country and they make many, many sacrifices for all of us.
Each year, we like to do what we can to recognize our military veterans and we’re doing that this year in a couple of different ways. First of all, our video outreach this week will include the names of the almost 200 BDS employees who have indicated to us that they once served our country as members of the military.
We do, indeed, thank them for their service.
You may also see the names of our veterans listed on our billboards through the community. This project is a partnership between Bay District Schools and Premium Outdoor Advertising.
We know the value of strong relationships with our military installations and so we work closely with leaders from both bases throughout the year. I am so proud of the ways in which BDS and our community work together to support our military families and I’m grateful for the incredible resources both bases provide to our students, our staff and our families.
We have a dedicated website just for military families (www.bay.k12.fl.us) and we plan many events in conjunction with our military partners. We meet regularly with the leadership teams from both bases to ensure we’re collaborating on the services needed for our families. In addition to recognizing our veterans, we also celebrate our military children during April which is nationally recognized as the Month of the Military Child. Each year, we’re blessed to have generous community partners who sponsor our recognition and the sponsor for this year is Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center.
Thanks to their generous sponsorship, we will be able to continue our tradition of recognizing the military children at each of our schools. It’s important that we honor the collective commitment and dedication of our families along with thanking our military service members for their service.
So, whether you observe Veterans Day by attending one of the many amazing events in our community or just by personally thanking the veterans in your lives, I hope you’ll take some time next week to honor those who have done so much for our country.
Veterans Day is far, far more than just a day out of school, or a holiday from work, and I know that all veterans will be grateful for our appreciation and thanks this Veterans Day.
