As Hurricane Ian dominates the news, you may be wondering if you should send your kids to school — or if schools will even be open.
Hurricane Ian is expected to pass west of the Florida Keys late Tuesday, but the storm’s impact may also be felt in South Florida.
The Lower Keys are under a tropical storm warning and are expected to be hit with tropical storm force wind gusts between 58 and 73 mph. South Florida will likely experience excessive rainfall and flooding due to king tide.

Here’s what to know about public school closures in Miami, Broward and the Keys.
Miami-Dade
Tuesday will be a regular day for public school students in Miami, the school district tweeted on Monday evening.

Broward
After a few hours of uncertainty and posts from angry parents, the Broward school district announced that Tuesday will be a regular day for public school students.

Schools and district offices will be open tomorrow during regular hours. All after-school activities are canceled, including field trips and night classes. Like Miami-Dade, all after-school activities, including field trips and night classes, are canceled. Aftercare programs will continue as normal, but the school district is urging parents to pick up their children as soon as possible.
The school district, which is working with emergency management to monitor Ian, said it will update families through “regular channels of communications” as well as through Twitter and Facebook.
Monroe
Public schools in the Keys will be closed on Tuesday and may also be closed on Wednesday, an official said during a Monday afternoon emergency meeting.
All Monroe County School District schools and offices will be CLOSED Tuesday, September 27. There have been no decisions on school operations for Wednesday, September 28. Stay tuned for further updates and stay safe.
