Schools closing in the Wilmington area due to Hurricane Idalia

With Hurricane Idalia forecast to move into the Wilmington area by late Wednesday, school systems are making plans regarding in-person classes.

Here's what happening at area schools.

New Hanover County Schools

In a news release Wednesday, New Hanover County Schools announced it would be close and transitioning to remote instruction on Thursday, Aug. 31. All after-school activities and athletics scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 30 and Thursday, Aug. 31 are canceled, with the exception of after-school care on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Brunswick County Schools

Due to the threat of inclement weather associated with Hurricane Idalia, Brunswick County Schools will operate on the following schedule, according to a news release from the school system.

There will be an early release day for all schools on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Your child’s school will release a call with specific times and information.

Schools will be closed for students and staff on Thursday, Aug. 31.

All afterschool activities for Wednesday and Thursday evenings are canceled.

On Friday, Sept. 1, schools are planning to operate on a regular schedule. However, if situations change, parents will receive notice no later than 6 p.m. Thursday.

Pender County Schools

Pender County Schools will close all schools and move to remote learning for Thursday, Aug. 31, according to a news release from the school system.

All after school activities, including PACES, are canceled for both Wednesday and Thursday.

Barring unforeseen developments, Pender County Schools plan to conduct classes and activities as usual on Friday, Sept. 1, subject to change depending on the weather conditions.

In order to ensure a smooth transition to remote learning, teachers are committed to maintaining open lines of communication with students regarding their lesson plans. Teachers will provide detailed instructions and resources ensuring that students have access to the necessary materials. Families who have limited or no access to internet services, please coordinate with your teachers to make the necessary arrangements. Please note that attendance will be taken to track students’ participation and engagement while away from the classroom.

Brunswick Community College

Due to the threat of severe weather, Brunswick Community College and all campus locations will be closing at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 30 as well as evening classes.

Campuses will remain closed on Thursday, Aug. 31 and if possible, classes will move to remote learning.

All campus locations will reopen on a normal schedule on Friday, Sept. 1.

Cape Fear Community College

Due to the threat of inclement weather from Hurricane Idalia, Cape Fear Community College will close all campus locations today, Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. and will remain closed until Thursday, Aug. 31. For updates, visit cfcc.edu.

The Academy of Coastal Carolina

In preparation for the inclement weather, the Academy of Coastal Carolina will be operating on early release for Wednesday, Aug. 30.

  • 11:30 a.m. Grades 4-12th

  • 11:45 AM - PreK-Grade 3

There will be no school Thursday, Aug. 31 and Friday, Sept. 1, which was scheduled as an early release day due to the Labor Day weekend.

Southport Christian School

Southport Christian School will have an early dismissal at noon today, Wednesday, Aug. 30. No afterschool care. The school will be closed Thursday, Aug. 31.

Southeastern Christian Academy

Due to the severe weather forecast, Southeastern Christian Academy will have early release today, Wednesday, Aug. 30 for grades preschool through 12. Afterschool is not available.

  • Preschool, noon

  • K-Second, 11:30 a.m.

  • Third-Fifth, 11:45 a.m.

  • Sixth-Eighth, 11:30 a.m.

  • Ninth-12th, 11:45 a.m.

Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington

The school will be closed for students and staff on Thursday, Aug. 31. Will reopen on Friday, Sept. 1.
