Schools release Board seat vacancies
Nov. 18—Candidates for public school board seats will be able to file for election Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 4-6, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., at the County Election Board Office, 415 W. First St.
To date, these local school districts have announced vacancies to be filled by 2024 elections:
—Verdigris Public School District, Seat 4
—Sequoyah Public School District, Seats 2 and 4.
—Foyil Pubic School District, Seat 4.
—Tulsa Tech, Zone 1.
—NE Tech, Zone 4.
Others announcements may be pending.
Election Board Secretary Julie Dermody confirmed school districts are required by law to publish notice of board vacancies in advance of the filing period.
Northeast Technology (NE Tech) noted the elected board member will serve a five-year term, beginning in 2024 and expiring in 2029. Justin Miller is the incumbent.
To be eligible as a candidate for member of the board of education of a school district, state law states a person must have resided in the district for at least six months preceding the first day of the filing period, and have been a registered voter with the county election board at an address within the geographical boundaries of the district for six months preceding the first day of the filing period.
In school districts that have been divided into election districts, a candidate must have resided in the district for six months preceding the first day of the filing period and have been a voter registered with the county election board at an address within the geographical boundaries of the election district for six months preceding the first day of the filing period.
Oklahoma law requires elected board members to complete certain training requirements within 15 months of appointment/election and annually to remain in good standing.
