Schools, services canceled as Greater Fall River recovers from massive weekend blizzard

The after-effects of the weekend's snowstorm are still being felt as the region continues to dig out from under an estimated 2 feet of snow.

According to snowfall totals from the National Weather Service, Fall River saw about 22 inches of snow as of Saturday afternoon. A state of emergency, imposed all day Saturday, was lifted as of 1 a.m. on Sunday. But although the skies were clear on Sunday, the sheer amount of snow that fell is still causing treacherous conditions.

Here is a list of current cancellations and closings.

Parking bans

Fall River's parking ban is still in effect until further notice. The ban allows parking only on the north side of city streets that run east and west and on the west side of streets that run north and south (generally, the side of the street without a fire hydrant). Unless otherwise posted, parking is allowed on both sides of any street that is divided by a traffic median, but not against the median. Parking is not allowed within 20 feet of a corner to allow access for snow-removing vehicles. Vehicles in violation of the parking ban will be towed.

Parking is available at these locations until the ban is no longer in effect:

  • Flint Municipal Parking Lot on Cash Street

  • Municipal Parking Lot on Columbia Street

  • Talbot Middle School on Melrose Street

  • Morton Middle School Parking Lot on Hood Street

Using space-savers, placing furniture or household objects in the street, is illegal and punishable by fine. It is each homeowner's responsibility to clear their sidewalks of snow, and failing to do so is punishable by fine.

Somerset's parking ban is in force until 11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30.
