Portales also offers summertime activities beginning with the city pool opening on Friday.

And for those interested in combining activity with community, a town cleanup is set for June 3.

"That's going to include painting of dumpsters," Jo McVey, administrative assistant for the city, said. The dumpsters designated to be painted are those that have already been graffitied. Those interested will have to come up with their own design so the city can provide the paint.

The cleanup will include anywhere in the city where trash is visible.

The Portales Public Library has almost every weekday occupied this summer with its All Together Now summer reading program. Those events can be found on the city website under services, then departments n-z.

Also in Portales:

— 38th Annual Heritage Days Celebration July 14-15 at the city park. Events include a parade, fun run, car show, food and crafts booths, games for the kids, live music.

— Boxcar Farms Summer Bash on June 24 — 25. It features food, music, and vendors

— Roosevelt County Fair, Aug. 22-27.
