Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is mourning the death of his father, whom he called an "amazing husband, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent."

"My father Abe, 98, passed away this evening," Schumer said in a post on Twitter with a picture of his family.

"In so many ways-he personified the greatest generation. He took whatever was thrown at him no matter how difficult, did his job, never complained. An amazing husband, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent," Schumer said.

"We love him & will miss him."

Condolences were sent to Schumer from both sides of the political aisle following the news of his father's death.

Abe Schumer and his wife Selma raised three children in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, the Senate majority leader's website states.

Abe Schumer grew up in Utica, N.Y., and served in World War II as a radio operator. After the war, he took over his father's exterminator business.

The elder Schumer, who also left two granddaughters and one great-grandson, died after Charles Schumer's 71st birthday on Tuesday.
