Schuylkill Transportation System announces free rides for vaccine shots

Mar. 6—Starting Monday, the Schuylkill Transportation System will offer free rides to all Schuylkill County residents heading to receive their COVID-19 vaccination.

A verified appointment for the vaccine within Schuylkill County is required. A reservation with STS must be made no later then noon the business day before the vaccine appointment.

As of Friday, the state Department of Health reported that 11,615 people in Schuylkill County had been fully vaccinated and 11,279 had received the first of two shots of the vaccine. That means about 8% of the county's 141,359 residents have received the full vaccination. The combined 22,894 who have been partially or fully vaccinated represents about 16%.

The number of cases of COVID-19 in the county, meanwhile, have risen by 776 in the past month, from 11,365 on Feb. 5 to 12,141 Friday, the department reported. That's an average of 27 a day.

In the past week, the total rose by 149, an average of just over 21 per day.

There have been 28 new deaths since Feb. 5, putting the total on Friday at 371. There were just three new deaths in the past week.
