Scientists discover 'teenage' woolly mammoth

A "teenage" mammoth was found

by locals in a Siberian lake

Location: Yamal peninsula

The skeleton is around 10,000 years old

and is stunningly well-preserved

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DIRECTOR OF CENTRE FOR ARCTIC RESEARCH, DMITRY FROLOV, SAYING:

"As for today, we know the biological age of the mammoth, it is approximately 15-25 years. Obviously we can not call it a baby mammoth, it was pretty mature. I would say it was a teenage mammoth, considering the average lifespan of a mammoth is 60 years."

Scientists have recovered 80% of the skeleton

//including ribs,

part of the skull

and foreleg bones //

Prehistoric finds are increasingly occurring

as climate change warms the Arctic

and thaws areas once locked in permafrost
