Scientists identify world's largest waterlily species

STORY: Scientists have identified the world's largest waterlily species

Location: London

The plant is called Victoria boliviana

Its leaves grow over 10 feet wide

and can support the weight of at least two people

(Carlos Magdalena, Kew’s scientific and botanical research horticulturist) “Fist of all its the biggest waterlily in the world. There is a record of about maybe 3-meters-20. This is something like 8 square metres of leaf surface, it's humongous. We knew that a plant about 1-meter-20 could support up about 50 or 60 kilos when you put it on the top of the plant. And this one - we haven't tried yet with the 3-meters plus leaf - but can probably take a couple of people easily."
