Burlington begins their loose leaf collection, The Horticulture Department at Alamance Community College won a second place ribbon in the Garden category at the state fair.

Here's the Scoop on what's happening in Alamance County this week.

Loose Leaves

Burlington's fall leaf collection is scheduled to start again next week; here's what you need to know.

Leaf collection will start in Zones 3 and 4 on Monday, October 24.

Please have loose leaves to the curb by 7:00am on Monday, October 17.

Leaves will be collected by the end of the week.

Burlington residents can prepare with these tips.

  • Place leaves for collection by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled week.

  • Loose leaves should be piled behind the curb, or on the shoulder of streets without curb & gutter.

  • Do not pile leaves in the street, in drainage ditches, or over water meters.

  • Do not park in front of or on leaf piles.

  • Leaves cannot contain gravel, limbs, glass, or other solid debris.

  • For more frequent leaf collection, place leaves in a yard waste container, no more than a 32 gallon container weighing less than 50 pounds, for collection on your regular trash day.

  • Leaves can also be collected on a "convenience schedule" during the month of February or by calling (336) 222-5005 to schedule a collection.

ACC Student harvest win at state fair

Nine students in ACC’s Career College put their creativity and talent to test with colorful entries in this year’s NC State Fair garden competition.

The Horticulture Department at Alamance Community College won a second place ribbon in the Garden category, according to a press release from Alamance Community College.

Horticulture students designed a garden with the theme of “A Tour of North Carolina: From the Mountains to the Coast," according to a press release from Alamance Community College.

“We had a great team of students, faculty, and staff to assist in the design and planting of our 2022 garden,” said instructor Hannah Smith.

Caleb Fox, Horticulture Lab Manager, Stella McLean, instructor in ACC’s Agriculture Sciences Department, and Miranda Kotarba, Welding instructor and her students created a rendition of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, according to a press release from Alamance Community College, according to a press release from Alamance Community College.

“We are so proud of the amazing success the faculty and students," Lisa Johnson, Vice President of Instruction said. "It's a great example of teamwork and the knowledge our students have gained."

Career College is an integrative, one-year post-high school certificate program for special needs students.

Each curriculum in the program, such as Green House and Automotive, is designed to provide a foundation for a career or more education, according to a press release from Alamance Community College.

With instructor Laura Miller, students enrolled in the Greenhouse and Nursery Assistant pathway learned about designing and constructing their projects, according to a press release from Alamance Community College.

Each student had entries in three different Special Needs competitions: Mini fairy garden or a mini terrarium; Scarecrow; and a wheelbarrow garden decoration, a group project.

“Even though we devoted quite a bit of time to these fun projects, we incorporated horticulture lessons along the way,” said Miller.

Some skills students gained from building terrariums include properly layering the soil portion and what plants work best for closed terrarium, according to a press release from Alamance Community College.

The scarecrows gave students skills on how to measure, cut, and fasten PVC pipe together and the wheelbarrow project taught students how to forage.

Those skills and the hard work of the nine students paid of, here are the several winners.

  • In the scarecrow category, Van Fowler won first place, Cevion Marsh-Sheridan won second place, and Aaron Mitchell won third place.

  • In the wheelbarrow category, Jamille Hewitt, Van Fowler, and Julia McKenney won second place for their NC Mountains to Sea.

  • Jaylyn Roberson, Julia Parks, and Tony Avila won third place for their Pokémon-themed design.

  • Cevion Marsh-Sheridan took second place for a mini terrarium design.
