Scooter rider dies in Queens crash with drunk driver, NYPD says

A scooter rider is dead and a BMW driver was in police custody Saturday following an early morning crash in Queens, cops said.

The man on the scooter was riding past the corner of 37th Ave. and 82nd St. in Jackson Heights about 1:15 a.m. when he collided with a BMW, cops said.

EMS rushed the scooter driver to Elmhurst Hospital, where he died. Cops were trying to identify him Saturday.

The scooter rider disobeyed a traffic signal as he entered the intersection, a police source with knowledge of the case said.

But the driver of the BMW, identified as Jairo Ortiz, 24, was found to be intoxicated, said cops.

Ortiz was charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.
