Scooter's Coffee offers free drink as part of teacher celebration event Wednesday, Sept. 7

Amanda McDevitt, a barista at Scooter’s Coffee at 2101 W. Ash St., makes a vanilla latte during the coffee shop’s grand opening. Espresso drinks are not eligible for the company's September free-coffee celebration.

At a moment when teachers testify to added pressures at work and turnover is high, a coffeehouse chain is offering a small boost in the form of free caffeine.

Scooter's Coffee recently announced its own mini-holiday — Scooter’s Coffee Teacher Appreciation Day — for Wednesday, Sept. 7. Teachers can receive one free drink of any size at a Scooter's location that day.

"Teachers are not only passionate about what they do, but they also exemplify Scooter’s Coffee Core Values of Integrity, Love, Humility and Courage, day in and day out," the company said in a news release.

Scooter's has four Columbia locations: 2101 W. Ash St., 204 E. Nifong Blvd., 2501 Grindstone Parkway and 5 Old Highway 63 South.

The company, which began in Bellevue, Nebraska, in 1998, now has coffeehouses in 27 states, the release said. Scooter's footprint in Columbia has quickly increased.

"Columbia is just a good college town," franchisee Kevin Hall told the Tribune in January. "It's progressive and has continued growing."

Hall also owns stores in Lake of the Ozarks, Jefferson City, Macon and Moberly.

To claim their free drink, teachers will need to present a valid school ID, the release said. The offer is good for one drink per customer, and isn't available to be ordered ahead.
