SATURDAY, 5/14

Boys tennis

DIV. I FREMONT SECTIONAL 1 Ashland's Ben Sinchok advanced to districts after finishing third in the singles bracket. The sophomore won his third-place match 7-5, 6-2. Reid Wash and Joel Harlan also competed in the singles bracket, but both were eliminated from the tourney after losing in the first round. In the doubles bracket, Caedon Blough and Seth Karnosh won their first match 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 but were then eliminated by Perrysburg. Cooper Glazier and Landon Davis also won their first match (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) but were then eliminated by Perrysburg.

Boys track & field

WAYNE COUNTY ATHLETIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS Northwestern finished sixth and Hillsdale eighth at the WCAL Championships. Weston Arthur won the 400 meters in 51.04 seconds and ran a leg on the first-place 4x200 (1:33.29), second-place 4x400 and third-place 4x100 relays to lead the Huskies, while Jacob Wakefield won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet-4. Lyle Carnegie placed sixth in the 110 hurdles to pace the Falcons.

Girls track & field

WAYNE COUNTY ATHLETIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS Northwestern placed seventh and Hillsdale eighth at the WCAL Championships. Chase Amlotte finished runner-up in the discus and Emily Thompson finished second in the shot put to lead NW. Jule Stoller finished third in the high jump and Maddie Gray placed third in the pole vault, and they both ran a leg on the third-place 4x200 relay. Miranda Eaton led the way for the Falcons with a second-place finish in the pole vault, while Sydney Elliott finished third in the 100, fourth in the 200 and ran a leg on the fourth-place 4x100 relay.

Softball

PLYMOUTH 9, CRESTVIEW 5 Crestview fell to Plymouth in Firelands Conference action. Mary Leeper slashed two hits, including a home run, and scored two runs to lead the Cougars.

Freshman phenom: Ashland softball freshman Makaree Chapman is raking at the plate

ASHLAND 11, MOUNT VERNON 10 Ashland defeated Mount Vernon to finish 12-0 in Ohio Cardinal Conference games. Makaree Chapman went 4 for 5 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Arrows. The homer was Chapman's seventh of the season, which tied the school single-season record. Natalie Atkins (four runs scored) and Hailey Lang (two runs scored) both added three hits and two RBIs, while Averi Iceman and Hannah Miller (three runs scored) both slashed two hits.

NORTHWESTERN 1, NORWAYNE 0 Northwestern's Daylie Rickard did just enough to outduel Norwayne's Alexa Cottrell as the Huskies picked up a late-season Wayne County Athletic League win. Rickard allowed just four hits during her shutout performance, while Olivia Amstutz drove in the game's only run during the third inning on a sacrifice fly.

HILLSDALE 12, DALTON 1 The Falcons closed out their WCAL schedule with another dominant win, with Taylor Morgan allowing five hits and the offense doing the rest. Belle Dalton led the way for Hillsdale, falling a triple short of the cycle during a three-hit, five-RBI performance. Madi Bennett also had two hits and two RBIs.

SOUTH CENTRAL 6, NEW LONDON 0 Maddy Prater tossed a four-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead South Central past Firelands Conference rival New London. At the plate, Prater slashed three hits, knocked in three runs and scored two runs. Annie Cook added two hits. NL's Emilee Rowland stuck out nine in a complete-game loss.

NORWALK 3, ASHLAND 2 Ashland dropped a nonleague game to Norwalk in 10 innings. Logan Fulk (RBI) and Wyatt Mohrman both had two hits to lead the Arrows.

ORRVILLE 5, LOUDONVILLE 2 Loudonville fell to Orrville in nonconference action. Aidan Wolford led the Redbirds with two hits.

THURSDAY, 5/12

Softball

SOUTH CENTRAL 15, VANLUE 5 South Central rolled into districts with a six-inning win over Vanlue in a Division IV sectional final. The Trojans moved on to play Firelands Conference rival Plymouth in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. May 17. Kaylee Richards (two doubles, two runs scored) and Hannah Ayers (three runs scored, two RBIs) both had three hits to pace the Trojans, while Maddy Prater (home run, two RBIs), Makena Calame (three RBIs) and Lydia Chaffee all added two hits. Prater picked up the win by allowing one run on three hits with 11 strikeouts in four innings.

BLACK RIVER 9, FAIRLESS 4 Abbie Graves slashed two hits, including a home run, knocked in four runs and scored twice to lead Black River past Fairless in a Division III sectional final. The Pirates advanced to play at Norwayne in a district semifinal at 2 p.m. May 17. Lilly Stief added two hits and scored two runs, while Mandy Hopkins scored three runs. Jordan Bradford earned the win, allowing one run on two hits with seven strikeouts in five innings.

MONROEVILLE 7, NEW LONDON 3 New London's postseason run came to an end with a Division IV sectional final loss at Monroeville. Jocelyn Speicher had two hits and an RBI to lead the Wildcats, while Madison Rowland scored two runs.

NORWAYNE 6, MAPLETON 0 Norwayne shut out Mapleton in a Division III sectional final. Holly Earl had two hits to pace the Mounties.

HILLSDALE 14, RITTMAN 1 Hillsdale got everyone involved as it clinched the Wayne County Athletic League title outright. Kylie Ohl, Mollie Goon and Belle Dalton each had three hits for the Falcons, with Dalton doubling twice and Goon driving in three runs. Taylor Morgan also had two hits, including a home run. Mackala Krichbaum picked up the five-inning win, allowing three hits and giving up zero earned runs.

LOUDONVILLE 22, CENTRAL CHRISTIAN 2 Loudonville still has playoff business to attend to but poured on the runs in the meantime against Central Christian in a Mid-Buckeye Conference make-up game. Olyvia Fenton had a game-high four hits and Karena Burgess and Peyton VanSickle each had two hits and three RBIs to lead the offensive outburst. Alesha Felix stuck out 10 and gave up four hits in the circle to earn the win.

Boys track & field

LORAIN COUNTY 8 CHAMPIONSHIPS Black River finished second in the team standings with 144 points. Keystone won the eight-team invite with 181 points. Andon O'Neal won the 110 hurdles (15.56) and 300 hurdles (39.83) and was a member of the second-place 4x100 relay (44.97) to lead the Pirates. Also winning events were Daniel Jeske in the shot put (45-3½), Joseph McKean in the 400 (50.52) and Jared Bradford in the 3,200 (10:21.19). The 4x800 relay of Treyce Wood, Logan Clifford, Wyatt Royster and Bradford finished second in a school-record time of 8:25.32, while also finishing runner-up were McKean in the 100 (11.16) and Wood in the 800 (2:01.27). The 4x200 relay of Nathan Urbas, Stephan Kozopas McKean and Blake Hopkins finished third in a school-record time of 1:32.91.

Girls track & field

LORAIN COUNTY 8 CHAMPIONSHIPS Black River finished sixth out of seven teams. Riley Kubitz won the 400 in 1:01.58 to pace the Pirates, while Olivia Szmania finished second in the 3,200 (13:31.90) and third in the 1,600 (6:06.48).

Baseball

BLACK RIVER 4, FIRELANDS 2 Black River kept its LC8 title hopes alive with a close win over Firelands. Hunter McJunkins allowed two runs on two hits with four strikeouts in a complete-game victory, while Ethan Foster slashed two hits and knocked in one.

ASHLAND 14, CRESTVIEW 4 Ethan Truax smacked two hits (double), knocked in four runs and scored twice as Ashland cruised to a six-inning nonconference win over Crestview. Kamden Mowry added three two hits (double), three RBIs and scored three runs, while Landon McFrederick had two hits (triple) and scored three runs. Jack Swaisgood earned the win, striking out four in four innings.

TUSLAW 10, LOUDONVILLE 9 Loudonville fell to Tuslaw in nonleague action. Judah Layton led the Redbirds with two hits (double) and four RBIs, while Matt Sprang slashed two hits (double) and scored twice.

WEDNESDAY, 5/11

LOUDONVILLE 11, CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC 1 Karena Burgess smacked three hits, knocked in four runs and scored twice to lead Loudonville to a five-inning Division IV sectional final win over Canton Central Catholic. Goldie Layton added two hits, three RBIs and scored two runs for the Redbirds, while Brooke Christine chipped in three hits. Natalee Buzzard allowed one run on five hits in a complete-game victory.

SOUTH CENTRAL 13, WESTERN RESERVE 2 South Central rolled to a five-inning Firelands Conference win over Western Reserve. Kaylee Richards (two RBIs), Maddy Prater, Annie Cook (three runs scored), Lydia Chaffee (two runs scored) and Lauren Ayers (two RBIs) all had two hits to lead the Trojans. Makena Calame added two RBIs, while Prater struck out eight in four innings to earn the win.

NORTHWESTERN 9, CHIPPEWA 4 Northwestern knocked off Chippewa in Wayne County Athletic League action. Avery Garver (two runs scored), Daylie Rickard and Olivia Amstutz all slashed two hits and knocked in a run to lead the Huskies, while Marina Aulger drove in two runs. Audrey Franks went the distance in the circle to earn the win, striking out four.

FIRELANDS 9, BLACK RIVER 4 Black River fell to Firelands in a Lorain County 8 clash. Mandy Hopkins slashed three hits (triple) and scored two runs to lead the Pirates. Jordan Bradford drove in three runs, while Emma Stief cracked two hits.

NORTHWESTERN 5, CHIPPEWA 1 Ryan Walter allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts in a complete-game victory as Northwestern downed Chippewa in WCAL action. Caden Fiala slashed two hits to pace the Huskies.

SOUTH CENTRAL 8, WESTERN RESERVE 7 A five-run six inning propelled South Central to an FC win over Western Reserve. Kayden Hauler smacked a double and drove in four runs to pace SC. Sam Seidel added two hits, including a home run, and scored three runs, while Hagen Adams chipped in two RBIs. Eric Sanders struck out six in 5⅓ innings to earn the win.

MOUNT VERNON 6, ASHLAND 5 Ashland led 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but Mount Vernon rallied for three runs to pull out a walk-off Ohio Cardinal Conference victory. Kamden Mowry led the Arrows with two hits (double), two RBIs and two runs scored.

DALTON 8, HILLSDALE 3 Dalton knocked off Hillsdale in a WCAL clash. Jack Fickes, Ethan Goodwin and Daniel Painter all singled and knocked in a run to pace the Falcons.

DANVILLE 10, LOUDONVILLE 3 Danville downed Loudonville in nonleague play. Peyton Regan led the Redbirds with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Boe Weiser and Aidan Wolford both added two hits.

TUESDAY, 5/10

Softball

HILLSDALE 8, DALTON 2 A fast start proved to be crucial as Hillsdale jumped on Dalton to secure a Wayne County Athletic League win and clinch a share of its first league crown since 2018. Taylor Morgan struck out 14 and allowed two unearned runs on three hits in a complete-game victory. Laci Huber led the Falcons with two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Willow Funk (two RBIs) and Lacey Fickes both added two hits.

NORTHWESTERN 3, CHIPPEWA 2 Northwestern knocked off Chippewa in WCAL action. Daylie Rickard went the distance in the circle, striking out eight. Marina Aulger added a two-run single for the Huskies.

SOUTH CENTRAL 2, NEW LONDON 0 Maddy Prater tossed a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead South Central past Firelands Conference rival New London. Annie Cook paced the Trojans with two hits (triple) and an RBI. Emilee Rowland took the tough-luck loss in the circle, allowing two unearned runs with seven strikeouts. Cloe Salmons paced the Wildcats with two hits.

HURON 9, CRESTVIEW 5 Huron knocked off Crestview in a Division III sectional semifinal.

COLUMBIA 6, BLACK RIVER 4 Black River dropped a Lorain County 8 game to Columbia. Mandy Hopkins (two runs scored), Jordan Bradford and Abbie Graves (triple) all had two hits to lead the Pirates, while Lilly Stief drove in two runs.

HILLSDALE 6, DALTON 3 Hillsdale erased a 1-0 deficit by outscoring WCAL rival Dalton 6-2 over the last three innings to secure its 14th consecutive win. Nick Kandel, Jack Fickes, Jake Hoverstock and Daniel Painter (two runs scored) all slashed two hits to lead the Falcons. Kandel picked up the win on the mound, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in five innings.

SOUTH CENTRAL 4, NEW LONDON 3 Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, South Central rallied for two runs to pull out a walk-off FC win over New London. Kayden Hauler led the Trojans with two RBIs, while Aaron Hauler slashed two hits. Sam Seidel and Karl Ferber both scored two runs. Aaron Hauler earned the win in relief, tossing 3⅓ scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Peyton Gatzemeyer drove in two runs to lead NL, while Reed Dalton slashed two hits. Logan Girton struck out seven on the mound.

CRESTVIEW 7, PLYMOUTH 2 A five-run third inning propelled Crestview past Plymouth in FC action. Mason Ringler struck out 10 to earn the win on the mound, while Hunter George and Tyson Ringler both singled and knocked in a run.

NORTHWESTERN 11, CHIPPEWA 8 Northwestern picked up a WCAL win over Chippewa. Jacob Ward went 4 for 4 to lead the Huskies, while Brandon Barnette smacked three hits and scored two runs. Caden Fiala drove in four runs and scored twice, while Cade St. Clair and Luke Wright both had two hits and two RBIs. Wright earned the win on the mound, striking out four in 5⅓ innings.

MONDAY, 5/9

Softball

NEW LONDON 16, MANSFIELD CHRISTIAN 0 New London opened the postseason tournament with a blowout win over Mansfield Christian in five innings. With the win, the Wildcats advanced to play Monroeville in a Division IV sectional final on Thursday. Madison Rowland went 3 for 3 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored to pace NL. Tara Davidson slashed a home run and a double, knocked in four runs and scored three runs, while Laila Rollin and Jocelyn Speicher both cracked three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice. Grace Popa added two hits and two RBIs, while Emilee Rowland tossed a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in the circle.

ASHLAND 6, NORTHWESTERN 1 Makaree Chapman did a little of everything to lead Ashland past Northwestern in a nonleague battle. The freshman slashed two doubles, knocked in four runs and scored twice, and she struck out 10 in a complete-game victory in the circle. Hailey Lang added two doubles and an RBI for the Arrows. Olivia Amstutz knocked in a run to lead the Huskies.

PLYMOUTH 6, CRESTVIEW 2 Plymouth knocked off Crestview in a Firelands Conference clash. Sophie Durbin went 3 for 3 with a home run, three stolen bases and two runs scored to lead the Cougars.

CRESTVIEW 6, PLYMOUTH 0 Crestview picked up a big FC win over Plymouth. Jarek Ringler struck out 10 to earn the win on the mound. Mason Ringler slashed two hits (double) and knocked in a run, while Brennan Fulk drove in two runs.

HILLSDALE 6, FREDERICKTOWN 5 Hillsdale picked up a nonleague win over Fredericktown in eight innings. Jack Fickes had two hits, including a home run, drove in two runs and scored twice to pace the Falcons. He also earned the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits in five innings. Ethan Goodwin added three hits, while Jax Rogers smacked a solo home run.

COLUMBIA 5, BLACK RIVER 2 Black River fell to Columbia in Lorain County 8 action. Carter Kocik slashed a double to lead the Pirates, while Eric Groesser drove in a run.
