Scotch Plains man allegedly attacked 81-year-old with knife, charged with attempted murder

SCOTCH PLAINS – A 47-year-old township man has been charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of an elderly man early Monday,

Farid C. Basma also has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and possession of a weapon, police said,

Scotch Plains police said officers responded about 1:40 a.m. Jan. 24 to the 400 block of Hunter Avenue on a report of a stabbing, where they found an 81-year-old man suffering from stab wounds to the face and upper torso who was bleeding heavily.

The suspect was identified as Basma, who lives at the same address as the victim. Police did not indicate if the two men are related.

The victim was transported to University Hospital in Newark where it was determined he suffered two stab wounds to the chest, one to the top of his shoulder and a laceration to the face, police said.

Basma, who was not injured, was arrested, processed and later taken to a secure facility at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, police said.

A stainless-steel knife with an 8-inch blade was identified as the weapon, police said.
