Scott Beard letter: Proposed Abilene ordinance would be enforceable

For those concerned the proposed "sanctuary city for the unborn ordinance" would not be enforceable across state lines — the following information is meant to bring correction to that belief.

The Supreme Court already has ruled on this jurisdictional issue in Skiriotes v. Florida, 313 U.S. 69 (1941). Anyone who examines that Supreme Court decision must acknowledge that the Supreme Court already has recognized that states have a vested interest in addressing injustices that has been committed against their residents, even when those injustices take place in areas outside of their borders.

As a political subdivision working within the laws of the state of Texas, we believe Abilene has this authority to address in justices committed against our residents.

Abortion is a great injustice regardless of where that takes place — In Abilene, Texas or in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Editor's note: Scott Beard is pastor of FountainGate Fellowship Church and a proponent of the ordinance before Abilene voters Nov. 8.
