One of the longest-serving boys basketball coaches at a Shore Conference school got a heartwarming send off in the team's last home game of the season.

Red Bank Regional coach Scott Martin, who's stepping down at the conclusion of the Bucs' 2021-2022 season, took a moment to thank the players and the fans, who have supported him for the last 21 seasons.

But before Martin could give his short speech, his players had to handle some business on the basketball coach against Middletown North in an NJSIAA Central Group 3 first-round game.

The No. 8 seed Bucs defeated No. 9 seed Middletown North, 54-47 as Nick Valentino had a team-high 18 points.

That gives Martin at least one more game to coach when the Bucs go on the road to continue in the NJSIAA Central Group 3 quarterfinals at Manasquan on Thursday.

"Last year was my son's senior year and last year was stolen from him and all of these guys (via COVID-19). He and I sat down and talked. And I asked him if he wouldn't mind if I continued," Martin said. "And he said 'Dad, of course, I've been playing high school basketball for four years and you've been coaching for like a hundred years."

Martin hasn't been coaching quite that long but he has been a coach for 23 seasons and 21 of them as the head coach at Red Bank.

Martin Buc Holiday Classics (Albert Martin, no relation, was coached by Scott Martin; Albert died after collapsing during a break at a pre-season scrimmage in 2012), secured three Shore Conference division titles, made three NJSIAA Sectional Final appearances and made three Shore Conference Tournament semifinal appearances.

"They (Middletown North) are a really tough team. They have a lot more size than us. But we just came to play," Valentino said. "We are all very close. We have great team chemistry and I'm personally very close to the seniors and we couldn't lose this game. We knew we had to win it for them."
