Scott says he won’t need breakout moment in second GOP debate despite lagging poll numbers

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), one of several 2024 GOP candidates, said he doesn’t think he needs a breakout moment in this week’s GOP primary debate, despite trailing multiple presidential contenders in the polls.

When asked on “Fox News Sunday” if he needs a standout moment during the debate, Scott said, “I don’t think so, what I need to do is continue to do what I have been doing — showing up.”

Scott was asked about a recent Fox Business poll, which showed his support among Iowa GOP caucus-goers dropping to 7 percent, down from July when it showed 11 percent support.

“The more time I spend in Iowa, the better off I will be,” said Scott. “The more time I spend in New Hampshire, the better off I will be,” in reference to the two key primary voting states.

“The good news is polls don’t vote, but people do, and so I need to make sure that I find myself in front of the most people as possible on a consistent basis,” the South Carolina senator continued.

Meanwhile, that Fox Business poll showed former President Trump leading the nomination race by 31 points, with 46 percent support, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSanits (R) trails behind in second at 15 percent, a slight drop from July, where he showed 16 percent.

Scott has maintained a mostly optimistic and cordial attitude throughout his campaign but some Republicans calling his first debate performance lackluster.

Scott has signaled he could take a more aggressive approach towards his White House rivals.

Last week, he took a swipe at Trump, DeSantis and former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley over the issue of abortion, saying on Fox News they “have all run away from protecting life.”
