Scottsboro high school student creates program to help his community

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — Kyle Wright has found academic success attending Scottsboro High School.

In his junior year he was named secretary of the Alabama State Beta Club.

It’s a nationally based educational youth organization that allows students with high academic accomplishment to be creative in other areas.

Kyle says that serving has been a great honor.

“I was put into a leadership position through that and it kind of opened my eyes to a lot of aspects of it and so ever since then I feel like I’ve been trying to do a lot more,” Kyle said.

Kyle notes that poverty in Jackson County is an issue he began to learn more about.

He realized he has been blessed with opportunities other students in his community have not.

“I obviously know that, and they’ve always given me the things that I needed in life, and I’ve never gone without,” Kyle explained.

Now he’s using his position with the Beta Club to find a way to transfer that privilege to people who may not otherwise get the same opportunities to excel, through the creation of his step-by-step program.

Kyle said one the main components to his Step-By-Step program is mentorship. Being a mentor and a positive influence on the younger kids in his neighborhood who are facing some challenges.

“Not everyone has that same journey and it’s tough to hear,” Kyle said. “It opens your eyes to so many different kinds of people, so I just think that kind of made me want to do more for people.”

Kyle talked to his principal and explained his plans. Together they brought the project to life. The goal is to bring awareness and help those in our community living in poverty.

“He’s doing it for our community and trying to look for something that is a broader scale and hopefully this project will carry on,” said Beth Strickland, Beta Club sponsor at Scottsboro High School.

Earlier this month Kyle presented his project to the Scottsboro Board of Education and the city council. With their blessing, Kyle recruited several of his classmates to help with the program.
