Scouts gather at Pee Wee Hollow to celebrate its 100th birthday, do service project

More than 100 scouts from Wayne, Holmes, Ashland and Cuyahoga counties plus another 50 Scouters and visitors gathered at Pee Wee Hollow on the weekend of Oct. 21 for the Killbuck District Fall Camporee.

The Camporee celebrated Pee Wee Hollow’s 100th anniversary as a scout camp. In 1923, Wayne County Scout Executive R. O. Leibich used his own funds to purchase 40 acres of land in the northwest corner of Wayne County to be used by Scouts in this area. A nonprofit corporation was created, Pee Wee Hollow Inc, to manage and maintain the property. Over the years, the camp has expanded through donations and acquisitions to its current 205 acres.

Thousands of Scouts have camped at Pee Wee Hollow since 1923. They have enjoyed troop campouts, Klondike Derbies, worked on merit badges, persevered in challenging weather, developed teamwork and made lifelong friendships.

Pee Wee Hollow is a location where Scout groups can fulfill the Scout purpose of helping young people in their personal development and encouraging them to make a positive contribution to society.

At this year’s Camporee, Scouts performed a service project to commemorate significant locations at the historic campground, played games, hiked, earned Scouting Heritage merit badge and ended the day with a rousing campfire program. There was also a museum and a trading post showcasing the camp’s history. Despite the stormy weather, a fantastic time was had by everyone.
