Scranton man charged with beating ex-girlfriend

Sep. 20—Old Forge police charged a Scranton man with kicking his ex-girlfriend in the stomach, slapping her and trying to strangle her Friday.

Joshua Lee Simon, 29, of 116 S. Everett Ave., also broke Maria Smith's iPhone and shoved her face into a carpet in her home. Simon choked her so hard, she blacked out, Smith told Patrolman Dennis Terhune, according to an arrest affidavit.

Smith told police she and Simon argued over his lying to her. She suffered bruises to her forehead and upper chest and nose abrasions.

Simon is charged with strangulation, simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment and criminal mischief.

He is jailed at the Lackawanna County Prison, unable to post $10,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday at 11:45 a.m.
