Scranton police: Boscov's employee charged in shoplifting scheme

Dec. 20—A cashier at Boscov's in the Marketplace at Steamtown rang a woman out for less than $7 but bagged for her nearly $2,700 in merchandise, city police said.

Kierra Roach, 22, of Scranton, conspired with Jacqueline Cassese, 31, of Pittston, to steal merchandise from the city department store Saturday, according to a criminal complaint filed by Patrolman Kevin Sweeney.

Roach is charged with a felony count of theft by deception. Cassese is charged with a felony count of retail theft.

Roach scanned cheap items but bagged other merchandise for Cassese, including clothing, jewelry and bedding, Sweeney wrote in the complaint. The bill came to $6.58.

A loss prevention officer, Robert Edmire, told police a security camera caught them conspiring to steal, police said.

Other employees made an itemized list of stolen merchandise, which totaled $2,682.57.

Roach and Cassese were each released following arraignment on $10,000 unsecured bail. They are both scheduled for a preliminary hearing Dec. 29.
