Scratchers winner turns $2 into $1.2 million in North County

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — What a start to 2024 for one lucky winner who struck gold with a Scratchers ticket in Escondido.

Richard Tapia purchased a $2 Decades of Dollars Scratchers from Sun Valley Fuel on North Escondido Blvd. and won $1.2 million, the California Lottery said in a press release Tuesday.

Decades of Dollars is a Scratchers ticket that gives the player up to ten chances to win. Prizes range from a free ticket to $1.2 million.

More rain this week heightens flooding threat

The $1.2 million top prize, which is distributed over 25 years at $4,000 a month, can be won if the player finds a “DECADES” symbol, according to CA Lottery. The odds of landing the top prize is 1 in 6,095,933, as there are two remaining top prizes at this time.

Meanwhile, Sun Valley Fuel will receive a bonus check of $6,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Other big prizes won across the state include a $10 million Super Bonus Scratchers and two $7 million Crossword Xtreme winners in Los Angeles County. A $10 million California 200X Scratchers top prize was also won in Orange County.
