Scream 6 directors talk Easter eggs in subway sequence

Scream 6's subway sequence is one of the tensest in the Scream franchise but it's chock-a-block full of Easter eggs, as revealed by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
The sequence features the main characters of Scream 6, including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera and Jack Champion, trying to track down Ghostface in New York City's subway. However, it's Halloween — meaning the subway car is packed with citizens in costume.
This made for an opportune moment to get plenty of Easter eggs in — and the team behind the movie did not miss. They revealed all in a new interview with Variety, explaining they started by including people dressed up as famous Wes Craven characters.

"We started with Wes then went through A-list horror villains, new and old, then the stuff that feels really relevant to people today that is a part of the zeitgeist," Plewes said.
"Scream is all about being meta and referencing the zeitgeist, and so you look at Ari Aster, Jordan Peele, we had Handmaid’s Tale zombies on the subway. We wanted Mindy to feel terrorized, not just by horror elements, but also patriarchal tropes that would really freak her out."
Specifically, people were dressed as various characters from the following Craven movies: The Last House on the Left, Deadly Blessing, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Deadly Friend, Shocker, The People Under the Stairs and Vampire in Brooklyn.

The exhaustive list of Easter eggs also included plenty of references to other iconic horror movies including The Birds, Carrie, Shining, The Rocky Horror Picture show, Children of the Gun, Hellraiser, Child's Play, It, The Grudge, Us, Midsommar, X, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Shaun of the Dead, The Babadook, Ready or Not, The Black Phone, and Scream and Scream 4.
The Addams Family was also referenced — a version of Wednesday Addams can be seen in the subway car, which is a nice little nod to Ortega, who plays the character in the Netflix series.
There were also plenty of other non-horror movie costumes, with some of the Halloween revelers dressed as various celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Spike Lee.

Plus, a trio of Scream 6 creatives had cameos, too: Bettinelli-Olpin can be seen dressed as Kurt Cobain; Gillett can be seen with a fake butcher knife stuck in his head; and producer William Sherak's daughter Eloise also features in the sequence.
Talking about their own cameos, the co-directors said: "It’s maybe a matter of 12 frames, if not less. Just a quick little flash, but we appear very briefly. The best 12 frames in the movie, certainly the scariest."
Scream is out now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD, or to download and keep. US viewers can also stream the new movie on Paramount+.
