'Scream Zone' Opens For Halloween At Del Mar Fairgrounds

DEL MAR, CA — Good news, horror fans!

Halloween may look different this year due to the pandemic, but rest assured you can still get the wits scared out of you at the Del Mar "Scaregrounds."

San Diego County's annual, fixture of fright for the past 23 years, The Scream Zone has returned for 2020 with a "Road Kill" theme and a revamped, drive-thru format. Opening night is Thursday, and the terror fest runs most days through Saturday, Oct. 31.

And don't bank on staying serene just because you're in a vehicle: Fear will fly.

"At the Drive-Thru Scream Zone: Road Kill, the only roadside assistance coming to your aid is a triple threat of zombies, serial killers and killer clowns," organizers said.

Staying seated in their cars, in keeping with COVID-19 precautions, patrons will wind through a mile-long course of scenes from classic horror films and other such demented attractions as Zombie Carnival Row and Mine Shaft Trail, cooked up by Scream Zone’s imaginative creators.

Hours for The Drive-Thru Scream Zone: Road Kill are Sundays through Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. A few dates in October will remain dark, and, due to the drive-thru model, ticket sales per hour may be limited. Follow this link for more info and ticket details.

The fairgrounds are at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. in Del Mar.
