After more than 25 years at the job, Hubert Reeves has resigned from being Screven County's attorney.

Reeves issued his resignation letter to the district on Monday, May 9, effective immediately. Reeves declined an interview with The Sylvania Telephone, but said via text message on Monday, May 16, that he has simply "aged out."

In his letter, Reeves wrote "It has been my pleasure to serve the people of Screven County" but he has "asked the Lord, over the past several months, for guidance on my continued service to Screven County. I have finally been given a sign that this is the right time to let a few things go."

He also wrote that "Not everyone has agreed with my advice and, sometimes, rightly so. I do not claim to have never made a mistake. But I do claim to have never made a mistake intentionally nor to have acted with malice. I have wonderful relationships formed with so many members of the Board of Commissioners over the years … and I regret leaving those with whom I so enjoy a relationship today."

Reeves has asked George Rountree, who Reeves calls "the most intelligent lawyer" he knows to "fill in" should Screven County Commission require advice while they acquire a new, permanent attorney.

Rountree has been a partner at Brown Rountree PC in Statesboro since 2000, according to his profile on the firm's website. He's a native of Emanuel County who graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law. He has a large range of practice areas from real estate and timber sales to commercial law and civil trials.

Rountree could not be reached for comment via phone or email as of Monday.
