Sculpture Milwaukee announces artists for 2023 outdoor public art exhibit

Sculpture Milwaukee has announced the names of seven artists whose sculptures will be installed in outdoor locations this summer.

"Actual Fractals, Act I" will be on view from June 30, 2023 through Oct. 2024.

Milwaukee artist and gallery owner John Riepenhoff is curating the 2023 exhibit. Works by Katy Cowan, Lars Fisk, Pau Houa Her, Nicole Miller, Mary Miss, Isamu Noguchi and Erika Verzutti will be included. Riepenhoff has titled the 2023 exhibit "Actual Fractals, Act I."

"The exhibition features artworks in a range of mediums that can rescale our expectations of contemporary sculpture," Riepenhoff said in a statement released by Sculpture Milwaukee. "They also help us to see what we share by existing in the same time and place — and to see each other with delight and renewed empathy."

Sculpture Milwaukee plans several events for the week of June 26-30, leading up to the exhibit opening. These include free public roller skating with Roll Train, 5-8 p.m. June 26, at Red Arrow Park; and opportunities to talk with Sculpture Milwaukee staff from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. June 28 at The Avenue, next to the "Dear Nature" exhibition, 275 W. Wisconsin Ave., and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 30 at Saint Kate - The Arts Hotel.

Earlier this year, Sculpture Milwaukee opened "Dear Nature," an exhibit of artwork responding to the 2022 outdoor works in "Nature Doesn't Know About Us," in the new gallery at The Avenue. Curated by Whitney Moon and Jennifer Johung, "Dear Nature" includes art made by students and faculty at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee School of Engineering, UWM Peck School of the Arts and UWM School of Architecture. "Dear Nature" continues through Oct. 2023.

Sculptures from the exhibit installed in 2022, "Nature Doesn't Know About Us," will continue on view through Oct. 2023. The 2022 works were installed downtown, in Walker's Point and on the east side.
