New Sculpture Walk installation aims to enhance Springfield's overlooked corners

Downtown Springfield will soon be home to a new art installation, only visible after nightfall.

Sculpture Walk Springfield and the Hatch Foundation will unveil their new project, "Alleyscapes" on Sunday, Oct. 1. The installation will feature a video art piece projected in the "backstage alley," located behind Hotel Vandivort and The Landers Theatre, each night from sunset to midnight. The alley is accessible via Robberson Avenue.

"Alleyscapes" opens Sunday, Oct. 1 as part of Springfield's Sculpture Walk installation. The video project will be visible behind Hotel Vandivort and The Landers Theatre.

A new video piece will be displayed in the alleyway each month, coinciding with First Friday Art Walk. The first "Alleyscapes" artwork will be created by cinematographer, composer and researcher Adam Hogan.

Hogan's work delves into both traditional production and experimental collaborations with choreographers, musicians and composers, according to a Sculpture Walk Springfield news release. His work has been featured in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; and Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis. He's also participated in film festivals like Berlinale in Berlin, Germany, and Athens Digital Art Festival in Athens, Greece.

Video projection is not a new way of displaying artwork for Hogan. His project "Roots" is a site-specific artwork that uses projection mapping technology to display images of natural spaces in urban environments. The project examines the relationship between developed space and natural landscape, according to Hogan's website.

Sculpture Walk Springfield celebrated the release of its eighth collection of downtown sculptures in April.
