SDDOT reopens stretches of I-90, more expected
Dec. 23—PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Department of Transportation announced additional sections of Interstate 90 have been reopened Friday, Dec. 23, with additional openings expected tomorrow.
I-90, both eastbound and westbound lanes, is open from Rapid City to Murdo. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-90 were expected to be opened at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon from Murdo to Mitchell. Also planned is the reopening of both lanes of I-90 from Mitchell to Sioux Falls sometime Saturday morning, Dec. 24.
Due to the extremely cold temperatures and windy conditions, applying chemical and salt are not effective treatment options. The SDDOT advises:
* Travelers should expect to encounter ice-covered roads and snow covered shoulders.
* Snow removal equipment will be working to remove ice in the driving lanes and snow remaining on shoulders.
* Please use extra caution and reduce travel speed.
No Travel Advisories continue to impact state highways across South Dakota, with many highways physically impassable from blockages of large snow drifts, stranded vehicles, and completely plugged bridges.
