SDF commander says Trump did not oppose deal with Damascus to fend off Turkish offensive

BEIRUT, Oct 16 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump did not object to an agreement cut between Kurdish-led forces and the Syrian government to protect Syria from a Turkish offensive, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Kobani said on Wednesday.

In an interview broadcast on Kurdish-language Ronahi TV, Kobani said Russia would guarantee the agreement SDF forces made with Damascus, and that it would pave the way for a political solution able to guarantee Kurdish rights in Syria.

Kobani said the agreement requires Syrian government forces to deploy across the entire northeastern border with Turkey and that reports of the SDF handing control of their areas over to government forces were incorrect. (Reporting by Eric Knecht and Suleiman Al-Khalidi; editing by Grant McCool)
