Seacoast high school Athletes of the Week: Sylvia Guarracino, Daniel Doherty win the vote

In the sixth edition of Athlete of the Week for the 2022 fall season, Portsmouth/Oyster River football player Daniel Doherty and Portsmouth girls soccer player Sylvia Guarracino had great performances for their respective teams last week to earn girls and boys Athlete of the Week honors for Oct. 3-8.

Doherty joins previous winners, which includes York High School football players Brody Gullison and Ty Regis, along with Newmarket soccer player Nick NigroTy Cougler (Marshwood football) and Owen Simas (St. Thomas Aquinas soccer) as the fall winners so far on the boys side.

Guarracino joins Marshwood soccer player Jadyn EastmanOyster River soccer player Alyska Alcocer, St. Thomas Aquinas soccer player Maddie KarsonovichHadley Cucco (York field hockey) and Erin Lynch (Dover field hockey) as the fall winners on the girls side.

The weekly poll runs Monday through midnight Thursday and can be found at seacoastonline.com/sports and fosters.com/sports. Winners will be posted each Friday.

Doherty won the boys poll with over 64% of the votes, racking up a total of 516 for the win.

Second through fifth included Marshwood soccer player Rowan Carter (213), Dover golfer Jon DuMais (36), York soccer player Nick Mauro (27) and Somersworth soccer player Zephan Yoder (12).

Doherty was instrumental for the ClipperCats in Friday night's win over Keene, as he recorded five catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Doherty also added an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown in the win.

"Daniel had as good a performance as a wide receiver has had in the last 10 years," Portsmouth head coach Brian Pafford said. "He is a quiet leader who works on his craft daily. Extremely happy for him and all of his work continues to pay off for him."

Guarracino collected over 50% of the online voting, for a total of 2,459 votes.

Second through fifth were Dover field hockey player Leyden Churchill (1,663), Exeter soccer player Emma Smith (556), Winnacunnet volleyball player Lucy Gelbstein (34) and Spaulding soccer player Mackenzie Brochu (22).

Guarracino's two goals led the Portsmouth High School girls soccer team to a 3-0 win over Windham on Tuesday in a Division I contest.

"It's well deserved, she played very well last week, she had a couple of goals for us," Portsmouth head coach Mickey Smith said. "As a freshman, she's really come in and played very well at the varsity level right away. Very skilled player and strikes the ball very well."

Smith added, "(Guarracino) is a mature player for a freshman, both physically and mentally, she's fit right in from day one."
