Seacoast roundup: Papakonstantis powers STA baseball in Division II season opener

DOVER – Sophomore Thaao Papakonstantis had two hits, including a grand slam and five RBIs as the St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team opened its Division II season with a 20-6 win over Sanborn on Wednesday.

The Saints scored four runs in the first inning, 12 in the second, and four in the fourth. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule.

Sam Grondin had two hits and four RBIs for the Saints, while Cade Murphy, Charlie Covert, Ryan Gould and Kenny Avery all had two hits.

Michael Skowron and Murphy added three RBIs in the win, and Covert and Gould both had two.

BASEBALL

Portsmouth 14

MANCHESTER – Jake Carlisle allowed two hits and two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings, leading Portsmouth (1-1) to this Division I win.

The Clippers, who drew 17 walks, scored four runs in the first, third and sixth innings, and two in the fifth.

Gar Hindle (two hits, three runs, RBI), Elliot Miles (two hits, four RBIs, run) and Devin Driscoll (double, two RBIs, run) led the Portsmouth offense.

Winnacunnet 10

HAMPTON – Senior left-hander Ethan Nowak allowed two hits over five innings, striking out nine for Winnacunnet (1-1) in this Division I win.

Evan Gaffney scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game on the 10-run rule.

Nowak also had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs from the Winnacunnet leadoff spot.

Miles Pratt (run, RBI) and Jake Fredericks (two RBIs) both had two hits for the Warriors. Teammates Jackson Larck and Zach Conlin both had one.

Bishop Guertin 12

NASHUA - Bradley Grinnell and Darian Mercedes both had two hits for Spaulding (0-2) and Caleb Vinciguerra and Wesley Alfonso both had two RBIs in this Division I loss at Holman Stadium.

Spaulding’s Nick Adrien allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

SOMERSWORTH – Somersworth starter Eric Goodrich allowed six hits and four runs (two earned) and struck out four over four innings in this Division III loss.

Simon Grandmaison (RBI), Zephan Yoder and Logan Perrault all had a hit for the Hilltoppers, while Cam Dubois played well defensively at first base.

DURHAM – Oyster River sophomore Louis Goldberg laced a game-winning, walk-off single in this Division II game.

Sophomore Jackson Follis earned the win in relief, striking out three in two scoreless innings. Colin Klein, Lucas Savage, Wylder Tonkin, Owen Jacques and Follis all had multiple hits for the Bobcats.

EXETER – Senior Jakob Schwarz had two hits and six RBIs, leading Exeter (2-0) to this Division I win.

Sophomore Hayden Schimoler had three hits and three runs for the Blue Hawks, while Cam Snee had two hits and scored three runs.

Exeter’s Cam Piwnicki allowed one hit over five innings, striking out eight and earning the win.

Newmarket 24

PITTSFIELD - Sophomore John Schlieder allowed three hits and struck out eight, leading Newmarket to this Division IV, five-inning win.

Alex Dyer homered and had five RBIs to lead the Mules, while Parker Sweitzer had four hits, five RBIs, and scored five runs. Nick Nigro (two hits, three RBIs, three runs), Jack Ferrelli (two hits, two RBIs, run) also starred in the win.

KEENE – Cay Adams had two hits and four RBIs, and Maeva Shapiro laced a solo homer for Winnacunnet (2-0) in this Division I win.

Winnacunnet’s Maddy Eaton struck out 11 over seven innings. Lucy Gelbstein and Lily Snow both had two hits for the Warriors, and Arden Langmaid had one.

PITTSFIELD – Newmarket’s Gia Tilton and Isabella Mendez each had two hits for Newmarket (0-2) in this Division IV loss.

Tilton homered and had three RBIs, while Mendez had an RBI. Emma Crumb (run), and Chloe Roberge (hit) starred for Newmarket, which got eight strikeouts from starting pitcher Lillian Thompson.

GILFORD - Senior Ashleigh von der Linden allowed two hits and struck out 15 over seven innings, leading St. Thomas Aquinas (2-0) to this Division III win.

Abbie Gaynor (two hits, run, two steals), von der Linden (home run, two RBIs), and Kaity Kelly (hit, RBI, run) led the Saints.
