Sean McVay called Matt Gay to congratulate him after landing deal with Colts

Sean McVay is a coach that players love taking the field for, and it’s not hard to understand why. He showed another example of his leadership qualities when Matt Gay left in free agency, earning a record-setting free-agent contract from the Colts.

After learning that Gay was leaving, McVay gave his former kicker a call to show his appreciation and congratulate him on his deal with the Colts – a neat tidbit shared by Peter King in his column for NBC Sports on Monday.

This deal got done at 11:45 p.m. ET Monday, and there was this nice touch to it: When agent David Canter texted Sean McVay to tell him Gay was leaving for the Colts, McVay called Gay to tell him how much he appreciated everything he did for the Rams, and to tell him how happy he was that Gay was getting a big contract.

Gay was a stud for the Rams since coming to Los Angeles in 2020, particularly in the last two seasons when he made 60 of his 64 field goal attempts, only missing two tries each season. He helped the Rams win Super Bowl LVI, making one field goal and two PATs against the Bengals in the victory; he went 8-for-10 in the postseason that year, making all 11 of his PATs, as well.

Kickers may not be viewed as marquee players, but the Rams are going to miss the reliability and consistency that Gay brought.
