Sean McVay shares his favorite part about Matthew Stafford’s performance vs. Bucs

Sean McVay said this offseason that people told him he seemed like he’s in a better mood. His response to them was, “You’re damn right I am,” an indication that his new partnership with Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles was thriving as the two prepared for the regular season.

And thrive, it has.

Through three games, Stafford has looked like an MVP candidate and has quickly turned the Rams into a team that might be the best in the NFL. Against a good Buccaneers defense on Sunday, Stafford threw for 343 yards with four touchdowns and no picks, leading the Rams to a 34-24 win at home.

After the game, McVay told Peter King of NBC Sports what his favorite part about Stafford’s performance was.

“He just brings everything to life,” McVay said. “Here’s my favorite part about what he did today. He missed some throws in that game early where we had looks that we wanted. And he just couldn’t wait for his next opportunity to respond. He expects to make all those plays, but he’s unaffected when he doesn’t and he just can’t wait for his next opportunity to compete to do it. I can be my normal basket-case self, and he’s just so calm, so resilient and poised.”

The missed throws McVay referred to were two deep shots to DeSean Jackson. He underthrew Jackson on both of them, and had he put the ball in the right spot, it’s likely they each would’ve gone for a touchdown.

But Stafford didn’t stop throwing it deep and in the third quarter, he finally connected with Jackson for a 75-yard touchdown after the speedy wideout got behind the defense. That’s what McVay likes to see, and it’s why the Rams offense has been one of the best in the NFL so far.

The coach can’t help but gush about the way Stafford has played in his first three starts with the Rams, adding this in his postgame press conference following the win.

“What he’s done through three games, I think his resumé speaks for itself,” McVay said. “He’s done a great job through these three games. And that’s all he can really do. I think he’s just seamlessly accommodated himself or really acclimated himself to being in our building. His teammates love him. His coaches love him. And he just goes about his business. He’s so steady, so consistent. And I just thought he got better as the game progressed. And you know, love working with him.”
