The internet is perplexed after actor Sean Penn confessed that Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards had a massive effect on him.

According to Variety, the topic came up after Penn expressed he’s furious at the Academy for refusing to let Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a close friend of the actor, speak at the coveted ceremony.

He exclaimed to Variety, “The Oscars producer thought, ‘Oh, he’s not light-hearted enough.’ Well, guess what you got instead? Will Smith!”

He then heatedly explained that he’d had one interaction with Smith, which was pleasant, though he was horrified about his infamous actions at the ceremony.

“I don’t know Will Smith. I met him once,” he told Variety. “He seemed very nice when I met him. He was so f**king good in King Richard. So why the f**k did you just spit on yourself and everybody else with this stupid f**king thing? Why did I go to f**king jail for what you just did? And you’re still sitting there? Why are you guys standing and applauding his worst moment as a person?”

Penn added that should Zelenskyy have been present at the Oscars, the incident wouldn’t have happened.

“This f**king bulls**t wouldn’t have happened with Zelenskyy. Will Smith would never have left that chair to be part of stupid violence. It never would have happened,” he told Variety.

Smith slapping Rock was so upsetting to Penn that he felt the only thing to do in response was destroy his Oscars.

He told Variety, “I thought, well, f**k, you know? I’ll give them to Ukraine. They can be melted down to bullets they can shoot at the Russians.”

Penn has two best actor Oscars; he won his first in 2004 for Mystic River and another for his work in Milk in 2009.

The 63-year-old Academy Award winner’s bizarre diatribe caused quite a stir on social media, Bossip reported.

“Great time to remind everyone that Sean Penn beat Madonna with a baseball bat, broke into her house, tied her to a chair and beat her for hours, left to buy booze, came back & beat her some more and she even filed a police report & he was charged but he made her drop the charges,” one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“We’ve moved on from the slap. pls…,” another pleaded.
