Seaport District and Newbury Street square off as Boston’s shopping hot spot

Boston shopping scene took a major hit during the pandemic but retail experts say it is on its way back. But will it look different. The ever growing Seaport District is giving Newbury street a run for its money.

The Seaport District is a whole new side of Boston but does it have what it takes to become Boston’s new retail hot spot beating out places like Downtown Crossing and Newbury? “Lots of boutiques where you can wander in but there needs be coffee shops. There has to be atmosphere with plenty of people around, Kind of buzzy,” a shopper said. “The best shopping scene is Newbury street obviously,” another shopper said.

Retailers Association of Massachusetts President Jon Hurst says the Seaport may look busier than other neighborhoods right now because, “we still don’t have as many people back in Boston as we did 3 years ago,” said Hurst. Hurst says the Seaport has both people living and working there. “That creates consumer traffic that other neighborhoods don’t have,” said Hurst.

Betsy Jenney has been running her Newbury street boutique for 36 years and she’s confident will keep its top spot. “I see the traffic levels really good on Newbury street especially on weekends,” said Jenney, “we’re always going to be the best.”

The retailers association says Boston will have no problem supporting multiple shopping districts – and because the city is so walkable you can hit them all when you visit.
