JOE TORRES: We begin this evening with the investigation into a fatal stabbing in Washington Heights. One person was stabbed at the intersection of 181st Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. Now police are looking for a suspect. Eyewitness News reporter Naveen Dhaliwal joins us from the scene. Naveen?

NAVEEN DHALIWAL: Now, Joe, this is an active scene at 5:00 PM. And right now, 181st Street closed off between St. Nicholas and Wadsworth Avenue. And this is what we know right now. Investigators arrived here just after 2:00 PM to find a man stabbed in the left arm. He was profusely bleeding, and we've learned he was transported to Columbia Presbyterian, where investigators say he passed away.

Now, the suspect right now, they say, still on the loose. Officers arrived here and immediately began to cordon off the scene and spoke to possible witnesses. Now, this is a very busy, high foot and road traffic area with street vendors along with residential apartments. And some very concerned tonight.

FRANK MARTINEZ JUNIOR: It's happening everywhere today. You know, it's so sad. You know, it's unfortunate that these kids don't know where their head is going to. This is happening so often today. It's a shame. It really is.

NAVEEN DHALIWAL: And that was Frank Martinez. He's actually lived in a building right here for the past 54 years. He says this neighborhood is changing, and he is keeping a close eye on his surroundings tonight. Again, that suspect on the loose. And tonight, police are looking for a motive in this fatal stabbing. Reporting live from Washington Heights, Naveen Dhaliwal, Channel 7 Eyewitness News.
