Search suspended for missing Colorado man with North Dakota ties

Oct. 24—DURANGO, Colo. — The search for a Colorado man with North Dakota ties in the La Plata Mountains was formally suspended by the La Plata County Emergency Management.

David Lunde, 29, went missing on Saturday, Oct. 1, after going for a run in the mountains that was anticipated to last only a few hours.

According to

The Durango Herald

, Lunde's vehicle was found parked outside the trail to Madden Peak. Many groups have contributed to the search for Lunde.

"Searchers recently suspended daily ground missions trying to find him,"

The Durango Herald reported

.

Lunde's sister, Kaia Lunde Berggren, created a public Facebook group called "David Lunde's Prayer Warriors" a few days after his disappearance.

Berggren posted that despite an "impressive operation", the search crew from Oct. 15, "hadn't even found a trace of David."

"Although our hearts are deeply saddened by this news," Berggren wrote, "we also know our hope isn't in this world. The organizer of the SAR crew shared the first week, 'we have a boy to bring home.' Although we all prayed fervently for that home to be earth, our family has come to accept that coming home may mean heaven and not on earth."

On Oct. 21, Berggren shared that her brother had planned to run 61 miles to fundraise for

Rockside Ranch

(a nonprofit residential program for young men) on his 30th birthday, which would have been Sunday, Oct. 23.

Berggren encouraged others to participate. She shared various ways to honor David for his birthday, asking members of the Facebook group to share photos using the hashtag #DurangoDavid. Berggren also shared information about how to support Rockside Ranch.

Lunde is the son of Marybeth and Nathan Lunde, who live in Cooperstown, N.D. He previously served as the Griggs County tax equalization director.
