Search warrant in Gardner yields drugs, loaded handgun; five face charges

GARDNER ― Five people face charges after local police, the North Worcester County Drug Task force and the Worcester Drug Enforcement Administration completed a search warrant Tuesday evening at 42 Main St.

Law enforcement seized 50 grams of fentanyl, 54 grams of crack cocaine, $895 in cash, and a loaded 9 mm handgun.

The suspects were arraigned Wednesday morning at the Gardner/Winchendon District Court.

According to Gardner Police Chief Eric McAvene, law enforcement investigated the group for two months prior to Tuesday's bust.

No additional arrests are expected, he said.

Savannah Hamel, 27, Gardner is charged with possession of a firearm without a Firearms Identification Card; possession of ammunition without an FID card; trafficking 36 grams or more of cocaine but less then 100 grams of cocaine; and possession with intent to distribute Class A drugs.

John Scott Gray, 34, Gardner, is charged with possession of a firearm without a Firearms Identification Card; possession of ammunition without FID card; trafficking 36 grams or more of cocaine but less then 100 grams of cocaine; and possession with intent to distribute Class A drugs.

Yamarra Bayala, 37, Gardner; Keith Richards, 46, Gardner; and Joshua Alan May,33, Ashby, MA, are each charged with illegal possession of Class B drugs (crack cocaine).

All five defendants are due back in court for a pretrial hearing on Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. Calls to the defendants' attorneys were not returned.
