Sears emerges from bankruptcy with just 1 store remaining in Massachusetts

Sears has emerged from bankruptcy after a four-year stay that saw the once-mighty department store chain dwindle from nearly 700 stores down to less than 25.

Sears Holdings’ bankruptcy estate reorganization plan took effect at the end of October, signaling an end to Chapter 11 and the beginning of a liquidation process, Fox Business reported.

The business entered bankruptcy in 2018. Since then, all but 22 Sears locations in 14 states and Puerto Rico have been shuttered.

The only remaining Sears location in Massachusetts is in Braintree. According to Sears.com, that location is at the South Shore Plaza on Granite Street, where an in-store pickup service is offered to online customers.

There are no other Sears stores remaining in New England.

Sears stores in Marlboro, North Attleboro, and Brockton closed back in 2021.
