You Season 4: Everything We KnowNetflix

*Spoilers for You season 3 below!*

Good news, neighbors. Joe is back for season 4 of the breakout Netflix series You.

We know that season 3 chronicled Joe and Love’s journey as they, um, *tried* to adjust to life as a married couple and parents to a baby boy in Northern California. But, the couple soon found themselves entangled in a messy (albeit, familiar) web as Joe set his sights on a new neighbor — and when that didn’t work out, Madre Linda’s librarian, Marienne — and Love delved deeper into her obsession with her hubby.

As you prepare to dive into Joe’s latest schemes and stalkings, here’s everything you need to know about You season 4.

When does You season 4 come out?

Our favorite stalker has returned to our screens once again. Part 1 of You season 4, which consists of five episodes, premiered on Netflix on February 9, 2023. However, you’ll have to wait just a *bit* longer for the final five episodes. Part 2 starts streaming exactly one month later on March 9, 2023. Both segments will drop at 3 a.m. EST.

In the initial teaser, it’s revealed that Joe moved to London and changed his identity (yet again). This time, he’s a university literature professor who goes by the name Jonathan Moore.

Is there a trailer for You season 4?

Yes! The second part of You season 4's trailer dropped on the show's official Instagram account following the release of part 1. In the teaser, Joe confronts Rhys, who seemingly "wants a friend" and "cares" for him. We also see Nadia running for her life while Joe and Kate's relationship continues to heat up. At the end, Joe is faced with his wife, Love, who viewers thought had died in season 3's finale.

In January 2023, Netflix dropped the trailer for part 1 of You’s new season. “New year, new country, new persona - and yet Joe can’t seem to shake off his past,” the caption of the post reads. In the trailer, we see Joe in London as his new alias, Professor Jonathan Moore. As he attempts to let go of his past, he falls in with a group of wealthy, spoiled friends from Oxford. While still pining after Marienne, he suspects one of them to be a murderer in plain sight. Watch the full trailer below.

What about photos?

Before you start streaming, have another look at You season 4. In January 2023, Netflix dropped four new photos from the latest season, providing another sinister sneak peek into Joe’s life among the London elite. While three shots capture his burgeoning “friendships” with Adam (Lukas Gage) and Roald (Ben Wiggins), and his intimate relationship with Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), one image seemingly depicts Joe’s (inevitable) return to his dark side.

One month earlier, the streamer took to Twitter to release other stills from the show, which include a look at Joe’s possible new obsession, Kate. The two get close in one photo, while others feature Joe’s new friends frenemies.

Netflix also previously dropped a poster for the upcoming season, which offers yet another chilling look at Joe as Jonathan, his new persona across the pond. “Heads will enroll. Professor Jonathan Moore’s class is in session with Part 1 February 9 on @netflix,” the caption read.

What is You season 4 about?

You season 4 is a murder mystery in the style of author Agatha Christie. After faking his own death in Madre Linda, Joe changes his identity, moves to London, and accepts a job as a literature professor at a local college. Here, he begrudgingly befriends a group of young, uber-wealthy aristocrats.

“I’m not the lovable bookstore manager in New York, or the shop clerk in LA, or the doting husband in the suburbs now. Not anymore,” Joe says in a teaser clip that premiered during Netflix’s TUDUM event. “Allow me to reintroduce myself: I’ve gone through a bit of refinement upon crossing the pond. And living in London has allowed me to bury the past if you will.”

In October 2021, You executive producer Sera Gamble teased the theme for season 4. “Reading Caroline's novel, Greg and I were instantly obsessed with Joe Goldberg and his twisted worldview. And it’s been thrilling to watch Penn bring Joe to creepy yet compelling life. We’re deeply grateful that Netflix has shown You such monumental support and that people around the world have enjoyed watching Joe really get it all very wrong over the past three seasons. The whole You team is excited to explore new, dark facets of love in Season 4,” she said in a statement to Variety.

By the end of season 3, tons of characters are dead thanks to Joe’s (and Love’s) antics. After killing his wife and handing his child to a new family, Joe fakes his death and flees to Paris to find his new “you,” Marienne.

But watching Joe to turn over a new leaf (or at least, try) in a new city isn’t the only change viewers can expect in season 4 of You. In a chat with Entertainment Tonight, Penn revealed that he “would sure hope” that Joe changes his volatile personality, but he acknowledged how things continue to get in the way of his growth. “The problem is in him, it’s not so much outside of him so he’s trying to change. He is always trying, failing, trying.” Penn also dished on some of the other changes season 4 will bring.

“The tone is similar but it’s shifting in that there is a different format. We’re using a different format,” he explained. “It’s almost like we’re shifting the genre slightly. And I think it works.”

When did You season 4 finish filming?

Production for the hit series took place in London, ofc, and wrapped in 2022.

Apart from being the series lead, Penn took on a new behind-the-scenes role for season 4. In an Instagram post, showrunner Sera Gamble announced that our very own Joe Goldberg also directs. “We hired a new director this season but he seems to know the show really, really well,” she wrote. Back in April, Netflix also shared behind-the-scenes photos of Penn on set.

The show’s official Instagram account previously announced production for the new season on Instagram. “Feeling YOU-4-IC. YOU Season 4 is now in production.” Ambry Childs, known for her role as Candance in the show’s first two seasons, sent her well wishes. "Congratulations!!! ❤️," she wrote.

In April 2022, a fan also took to TikTok to share a clip of Penn skipping through the streets of London. Trust us when we say this is everything we never knew we needed to see. “Arrived to campus today and they were filming You season 4,” the video text reads.

The campus in question is Royal Holloway at the University of London, and fans had a lot to say in the comments. “Why does it feel like every university in the UK is temporarily being occupied by Netflix?,” one user wrote while another said, “You pulled a Joe Goldberg on Joe Goldberg.”

Are there any new characters in You season 4?

With Joe — sorry, Jonathan — relocated to London, and (most) of his past dead and buried, we can expect several new characters.

Netflix exclusively confirmed that Tilly Keeper, Amy Leigh Hickman, and Ed Speleers would be joining the show as season regulars.

Known for her role on EastEnders, Tilly stars as the “sweet,” “kind,” “rich,” “famous,” and “chaotic,” celebrity Lady Phoebe. “Phoebe’s every bikini wax has been documented by the tabloids since she was 15 years old,” Netflix confirmed in a press release. “An aristocratic socialite with an avid fan base, Phoebe’s true colors show when she’s alone with her friends. She’s a steadfast cheerleader, especially to her American entrepreneur boyfriend, Adam. She’s also a wild card: when misfortune strikes, will she rise to the occasion or shatter?”

Amy plays Nadia, a literature major “with a love of genre storytelling and the aspiration to be a serious author.” According to Netflix, Nadia’s “outspokenness and intensity are the perfect cover for the insecurities carried by a young woman who’s never been accepted by her peer group. She’s made some big mistakes; now, they threaten to destroy her life. She’ll need help, even if it’s from the wrong people.”

Ed stars as “dry, irreverent” Rhys. Netflix’s described him as “an author whose memoir garnered him acclaim and pressure to launch a political career.” Rhys was born into poverty and “lived a traumatic early life before he came into money, going to Oxford and making all the right friends. Now, he moves easily in any social circle while also seeing through those around him. He doesn’t have much time for partying, though he enjoys staying in touch with his eccentric circle of friends. After all, they were there for him in his troubled youth.”

Deadline reported that Lukas Gage, known for his roles on Euphoria and The White Lotus, also joins the cast for season 4. He plays Adam, an ex-pat American and entrepreneur living in London and the son of a wealthy East Coast business tycoon. Although he maintains a penchant for partying and gambling, Adam appears to be kind-hearted and quickly befriends Joe/Nick. But when Adam’s true identity begins to unfold, like many characters’ who came before him, Joe questions how much of a threat he poses.

Determined to prove himself, Adam’s taking big, risky swings, living by the truism that a good businessman does absolutely anything he can get away with. Does he love his wealthy, titled girlfriend, or is he using her? There’s no doubt he’s manipulating his friends; the only question is how far he’d go…,” the outlet reported.

Earlier in 2022, Deadline revealed that English actress Charlotte Ritchie plays Kate, Joe’s new obsession. Kate is an intelligent and independent art gallery director who “misses nothing” and, as the outlet reported, “has embraced the moniker of ‘icy b***h.’” She feels she must protect her best friend, Lady Phoebe. According to Deadline, Kate is introduced to Joe after her boyfriend, Malcolm, invites him into their circle: “Kate not only immediately dislikes him, she strongly suspects something about the man is not what he seems,” the outlet described. That sounds about right.
