The World Affairs Council of Palm Beach stays the course for the 2022-23 season with experts tackling pressing global issues, conflicts and possible solutions.

The Distinguished Speaker Series kicks off Monday with a presentation by Scott Addlesberger, director of the Criminal Justice and Forensics Program at Keiser University. He will examine the topic of “Safety in the Age of Technology.”

The season's members-only event is slated for Dec. 20 and will feature Kent Calder, director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, speaking on “Japan and Northeast Asia in Transition.”

Other issues to be addressed this season include climate and energy concerns, international trade and the Russia/Ukraine War.

"Our mission continues to be furthering global understanding," said CEO Celeste Simon. "We make every effort to remain non-partisan and incorporate diverse views in our presentations."

The council's education outreach efforts will include the World Affairs Council's Academic WorldQuest, a team trivia challenge for high-school students that culminates with a national contest in Washington, D.C. Competitors are tested in their knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, public health policy and culture.

Simon noted that the organization will continue to offer a hybrid season of events, both in-person and on Zoom for members — a change ushered in by the coronavirus pandemic.

Membership to the council is available on a tiered basis, from $5,000 for diplomat level to $10 for a student. The lectures are free for members and $35 for nonmembers in advance, $40 on the day of the event.
