Season's first substantial snow: How much there is and when it might stop

The region's first substantial snowfall is winding down as Tuesday afternoon slowly becomes Tuesday evening.

Snowfall is expected to continue through this afternoon or evening, with an additional 1 to 3 inches possible in some places. As much as 2 to 5 additional inches are possible in parts of Ulster County.

A winter storm warning declared by the National Weather Service remains in effect in Sullivan and western Ulster counties until 7 p.m.

A less severe winter weather advisory remains in effect in Dutchess and eastern Ulster counties until 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service has cancelled a winter storm warning that had been in effect in Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties.

But the weather service said occasional light snow is expected to continue in those counties into the afternoon, with less than an inch falling, and there is also a chance of spotty light freezing rain.

Snow began to taper off from west to east in those counties after 2 p.m.

Final estimates on how much snow will fall are ranging from 3 to 5 inches in Westchester County, to 5 to 8 inches around Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties, to 6 to 10 inches in Sullivan County, the National Weather Service said. The weather service did not provide estimates for Dutchess or Ulster counties.

Some minor flooding was continuing through the afternoon on the Hudson River in the Poughkeepsie area.

There have been relatively few power outages reported around the region so far today.

As of 4 p.m., Con Edison was reporting 49 homes and businesses in Westchester County were without power, down from 85 two hours earlier. Con Edison is now estimating the rest of those customers will have their power restored by 7 p.m.

New York State Electric and Gas is reporting 163 customers in Sullivan County, almost all of them in the town of Bethel, are without power. That is down from 267 two hours earlier. They hope to have those customers' power restored by 5:45 p.m.

Central Hudson said 35 customers in Dutchess County and 25 customers in Orange County are without power. It hopes to restore power in Orange County by 4:30 p.m. and Dutchess County by 5 p.m.

Orange and Rockland Utilities has only two remaining customers without power as of 4 p.m., one each in Orange and Sullivan counties. The company hopes to restore that power by 7:45 p.m.

Few major problems have been reported on the roads so far.

A multiple tractor-trailer rollover crash was reported on westbound Interstate 84 in the Newburgh area which closed that highway for a while early this morning. But the state Department of Transportation is no longer indicating a problem in that area.

While that area of I-84 was blocked, state police ticketed one town of Newburgh man for felony drunk driving after they found his sport utility vehicle in the median nearby.

Other crashes reported so far have been minor.

Newark Liberty International Airport was reporting a handful of cancelled or delayed flights this morning, but many others were taking off on time.

Westchester County Airport reported delays on several morning and early afternoon flights. A 9:14 a.m. Delta flight to Boston was canceled.

Metro-North was reporting that service on its Hudson and Harlem Line was on or close to schedule. Service on the New Haven Line is experiencingsome delays.

Most area schools are off today, many of which haven't used their snow days this season. Some, such as Yonkers and Pelham, are operating on a two-hour delay.
