Seattle Seahawks picked to 'upset' Arizona Cardinals in NFL Week 9 game

Every now and then some NFL game odds have us scratching our heads.

One such example is the point spread for Sunday's Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks game in Glendale.

The Cardinals, who own a 3-5 record and are in last place in the NFC West are listed as a 2-point favorite by Tipico Sportsbook over the 5-3 Seahawks, who lead the division.

Is something off with those odds?

Several NFL writers apparently think so in their analysis of the odds for the game.

It appears that the vast majority of them are picking the Seahawks to "upset" the Cardinals.

NFL Week 9 picks, predictions:

Yahoo Sports' Mark Drumheller wondered how the Cardinals could be favored over the Seahawks (or any other team for that matter, right now).

He wrote: "I didn't think Seattle would win five games this season, but I have to base my wager on who they are right now. I am watching the Seahawks learn how to win, close out games and build more confidence each week. The Cardinals have a 1-3 record at home and are only 3-6 ATS as a home favorite dating to last year. They lost five of those games outright."

Fansided listed the Seahawks over the Cardinals as one of its "upset" picks for this week.

Peter Dewey wrote: "There wasn’t a better opening line on the board than the Seattle Seahawks getting three points against Kliff Kingbury's Arizona Cardinals squad in Week 9. Seattle has been terrific against the spread this season, and Geno Smith has rejuvenated a team that looks like it completely couldn't stand Russell Wilson. Seattle already beat Arizona 19-9 at home this season, and Kingsbury's Cardinals have not been great at home, especially as favorites with him as the team's head coach. Since 2019, Arizona is just 5-11 ATS as a home favorite, and I wouldn't be shocked if it loses this game outright."

Pro Football Network had the Seahawks beating the Cardinals as its "upset of the week."

It wrote: The Seahawks ranked 31st in defensive EPA through five games (.17). They’re second in the three weeks since (-.17). Combine that with a quarterback in Geno Smith, who is fourth in QBR (66.6), and the Seahawks look less and less like a fluke by the week. Cardinals seemingly are who they are as well — a five-loss team whose three wins have come against teams that are a combined 7-16."

NFL.com disagreed with people picking against the Seahawks in their game against the Cardinals.

Nick Shook wrote: "Geno and Pete are defying the odds, while Kyler and Kliff continue to fall short of expectations. Like I said, I'm done doubting the Seahawks."

NFL Week 9 odds:

Fox Sports' Sam Panayotovich wondered how Seattle could be an underdog in Arizona.

He wrote: "The Cardinals have no business laying points here."

If Arizona somehow beats Seattle on Sunday, talk around the water cooler on Monday will be about how the Cardinals "upset" the Seahawks in NFL Week 9.

It doesn't matter if the odds indicate otherwise.
