Seattle's Police-Free Autonomous Zone Grows in Size

Protesters continued to fill the Seattle Autonomous Zone, also known as CHAZ (Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone) on June 11.

The area of the city was abandoned by the Seattle Police Department on June 8 and has since been occupied by protesters who were taking part in anti-racism demonstrations.

Footage of CHAZ shot on June 11 shows large peaceful crowds, with one video showing people chalking murals on the pavement.

Local news reported upon leaving the neighborhood, the police boarded up windows and surrounded the area with fencing. The police chief called it an “exercise in trust” intended to deescalate conflict between protesters and the police. Since then, reports of activity in CHAZ have deemed the area peaceful and akin to a street fair. Credit: gravemorgan via Storyful
